September is sad for private school owners in Tamilnadu marked by the demise of Dr.M.P. Vijaya Kumar, former Project Director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, who headed a state appointed committee to examine the delay issues relating to obtaining recognition certificate for starting a school. The power to issue no objection certificates are beyond the District Education officers even if all the mandates are complied with. The committee was holding public hearings in Chennai ,Coimbatore and Madurai to examine all grievance and complaints from schools in southern districts relating to delay, harassment, difficulties in getting timely certification . Being hard to predict the outcome of the committee’s report at this stage. it is simple to assume further delay.

| Twentysix year old Yama Dixit from Lucknow hit the headlines for winning the prestigious Gates scholarship to pursue her doctorate in Earth Sciences. Inspiration in environmental studies came to Yama after an early visit to the river Ganges polluted by human pollutants and ravaged by commercial exploitation. The river is considered to be one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. |

“At Cambridge, I aim to study whether environmental change was indeed the reason for the collapse of Harappan Civilization by reconstructing the paleoclimatic history of the region. My research at Cambridge should shed light on the nature of the patterns interrelating climate and civilizational activities. I aim to extend this research not just to other 'dead' civilizations but also to our modern civilization.” Says Yama. |

Among the countries showing solid evidence of concern for children’s education, Uruguay has not only made education compulsory for every child but also issued laptops to them. The budget machines called XO previously known as the $100 Laptop, Children's device are inexpensive subnotebook computers each costing US $220 or Rs.11,000 in Indian currency. Globally 3,80,000 primary schools have received the computers. Though the news has received striking publicity in “The Economist” dt Oct 3rd-9 , 2009, it brings to memory Mr.Satish Jha, President of OLPC India who had already initiated the scheme to introduce XO computers to the primary schools in the rural areas. |

| What is the fascination for Navadoya ? |
 |
“All states have accepted the scheme, except Tamilnadu. There has to be a Navadaya school in every district. We (the centre) not only want this to be implemented but also expand it. In fact the results of Navadoya Schools are better than that of Kendrya Vidyalayas.” he told reporters later.

Ironical enough the Union HRD minister Mr.Kapil Sibal made the above statement to the DMK ministerial functionaries perhaps not considering that the DMK party’s symbol also means a “new dawn.” Without much probing into Mr.Sibal’s intention,
it should be clear to all those committed to children’s education that a huge task remains to be done. Mr.Sibal further commented that Tamilandu was following the Rishi Valley method of freeing the students from the pressure of Exam and motivating them towards greater awareness of the world around them. |
